Client Criteria
Independent Identity serves adults (18+) with autism, intellectual disabilities, or related developmental disorders who benefit from a higher level of individualized support in a structured group setting.
Ideal participants:
- Benefit from smaller group environments with increased staff support (typically ratios lower than 1:6)
- Are working on building skills in communication, independent living, social connection, leisure, and vocational development
- May require support with self-help and hygiene routines, which can be a barrier to accessing more traditional adult programs
- Need support navigating challenging behaviors, such as aggression, self-injury, or property disruption, that impact access to other services
Our program is designed for individuals who thrive with compassionate, structured support and are working toward increased independence, engagement, and overall quality of life — especially those who may not have been successful in more traditional adult program settings.
Is Independent Identity the Right Fit?
Independent Identity is a therapeutic day program in Austin, Texas serving adults (18+) with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities who benefit from a higher level of individualized support. Our program is designed for individuals who may not have had access to traditional adult services due to the complexity of their needs, including those who require support with self-help and hygiene routines or navigating challenging behaviors.
Each day is structured yet flexible, with activities that are client-led and assent-based to promote meaningful engagement. Individuals participate in preparing simple snacks and meals, social and leisure activities, vocational skill-building, daily living routines, and opportunities to build tolerance for new situations and changes in routine. Skills are practiced both in our center and in the community, helping individuals build confidence and independence in real-world settings.
We maintain small group ratios to ensure individualized attention and support, with services guided by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and implemented by trained staff. Our approach integrates evidence-based practices in a way that prioritizes dignity, connection, and quality of life.

What is the cost of the program?
The cost of services at Independent Identity depends on each individual’s needs and available funding sources. We work with a combination of private insurance, Medicaid waiver programs, and private pay to make services as accessible as possible.
We are currently in-network with select insurance providers for ABA services, and many individuals utilize waiver funding to support their care. When available, these funding sources are used first, with private pay reserved for those without other coverage options.
We understand that navigating funding can feel overwhelming, and our team is happy to walk families through their options and help determine the best path forward.
